Artists and Artisans, Inc.  -  After a brief stint at a renowned literary agency, Adam Chromy started Artists and Artisans in order to go out on his own with a novel written by a close friend. The gamble paid off and the book was sold on a preemptive offer. Since that auspicious start in 2002, Adam’s fresh, rule-breaking approach has led to dozens of fiction and nonfiction book deals at major publishing houses, a national and New York Times Bestseller, and a number of film deals for his clients’ projects.Jamie Brenner has spent the past decade in book publishing. Her experience includes literary publicity (HarperCollins Publishers), book selling (BarnesandNoble.com), and manuscript analysis and book scouting for major film companies (Miramax Films, Davis Entertainment). She is also the editor of the blog www.girlmeetsbook.com.Gwendolyn Heasley is an author who brings that unique perspective to being an agent. Her young adult novel, Confessions of a Teenage Recessionista, is to be published by Harper Children’s. In the past, she has sold greetings cards, received a Master’s degree in Journalism, and taught creative writing in college. Gwendolyn is actively seeking YA and middle grade clients.

In order to minimize our impact on the environment, we strongly encourage authors to query via email instead of snail mail (please start the subject line with “Query”).  We read all of our email queries ourselves and respond very quickly when we are interested.  However, we usually do not respond when we are not interested – no response should be a clear enough indication.  So save paper and postage – do not send queries with SASE because we will not return them. All fiction queries must include a brief author’s bio, and the setup or premise for the book.  No unsolicited manuscripts will be accepted.  If we do request your manuscript, please send a disposable copy that we can recycle since new postal regulations make it difficult for us to return them.We do not consider queries for screenplays, photo or childrens’ books.  But we are interested in most genres of adult fiction and nonfiction. If you want to query about nonfiction, it would be a good idea to read Larsen’s “How to Write a Book Proposal” and Deval’s “Publicize Your Book” to understand the market and mechanics for publishing nonfiction.

Good luck.
